Balkan SunflowersBalkan Sunflowers is an international grassroots organization founded in 1999 to aid the Kosovar refugees. Volunteers from around the world saw the TV images of the war and refugee emergency. They wanted to help in ways that money could not. They believed that person-to-person contact with aid workers who came to work as friends and neighbors, might help restore community life in ways that emergency aid and political support alone could not. Balkan Sunflowers provided more than 100,000 hot meals to children participating in their Learning Centers Network program in 2009. |

Their mission is to empower people and communities in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease and social injustice. Their interventions aim to achieve large scale, positive changes through economic and social programs that enable men and women to realize their potential. BRAC, the largest non-profit in the developing world, was launched in Bangladesh in 1972 and today reaches more than 138 million people in Africa and Asia through its programs that address poverty by providing micro-loans, self-employment opportunities, health services, education and legal and human rights services. |
